A RESOLUTION
Honoring Jerrie Mock as the first female aviator to fly solo around the world.

WHEREAS,  The members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to pay tribute to Jerrie Mock on being the first female aviator to fly solo around the world; and

WHEREAS,  Jerrie Mock is a truly remarkable woman. A native of Newark and a former resident of Bexley and Granville, she became the first female aviator to fly solo around the world, completing her 22,858-mile flight on April 17, 1964, at Port Columbus International Airport. In recognition of this feat, her single-engine Cessna, "Spirit of Columbus," hangs in Dulles International Airport and a plaque hangs on the Aviation Wall of Fame in the Tallahassee Regional Airport, but she remains relatively unknown in her home state. Although the Licking County Foundation is raising funds to create a life-size bronze statue of her to be placed at The Works: Center for History, Art, and Technology in Newark, more needs to be done to create awareness of and call attention to this historic Ohioan; and

WHEREAS,  Jerrie Mock is deserving of high praise, for she has combined civic concern and commitment with selfless initiative to become a respected member of her community. Through her unwavering dedication to excellence, she has certainly distinguished herself as a conscientious and hard-working individual, and we applaud her on her tremendous efforts; and

WHEREAS,  Jerrie Mock's exceptional record of success stands as a hallmark worthy of emulation, and she has inspired countless people to excel in various areas of endeavor. The esteem and admiration she has earned throughout her life are clearly evident, and her accomplishment is a justifiable source of pride and an outstanding reflection not only on her but also on her family, her hometown, and the State of Ohio; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commend Jerrie Mock on her aviation achievement and salute her as a fine citizen; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to Jerrie Mock.
